Our Favorite BBQ Sauce

Updated: Aug 29, 2022

Slightly sweet, with a bit of heat!

My family absolutely loves this BBQ sauce, so I keep it on hand at all times! It is VERY versatile, and we use it on brisket, chicken, pulled pork, and more. It is just the right amount of heat, and not too sweet for our taste. It is easily adjustable for your own flavor profile, so don't be afraid to play around with the peppers.

"Can I have that recipe? That is the perfect balance of sweet & heat!"

Pro-Tip - I like to use Vidalia sweet onion, and find the biggest jalapenos I can find!

Our Favorite BBQ Sauce

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

  • 1 large sweet onion

  • 4 large jalapeno peppers, stemmed and halved

  • 1 tablespoon salt

  • 1 tablespoon fresh ground black mustard seed

  • 1 tablespoon fresh ground black pepper

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

  • ½ cup brown sugar

  • ¾ cup cider vinegar

  • 3 cups ketchup

  • ½ cup molasses

  • 1 cup water

Directions

  1. Heat a medium sauce pan and add the olive oil, onion and peppers. Sauté until onions are translucent and soft.

  2. Add salt, ground mustard and black pepper, and sauté for one minute.

  3. Add remaining ingredients, and reduce heat.

  4. Simmer for 30 minutes, stirring with a wooden spoon or spatula to keep it from scorching.

  5. After the sauce cools, you can either leave the veggies intact, strain them from the sauce or blend for a thicker consistency.

Pro Tip - My favorite way to serve is strained . As you can see from the picture below, blending does not really have an appealing visual, but it still tastes amazing! When strained, it has a beautiful molasses appearance.
